Hunting for Huckleberries...
I love picking berries. Maybe it's because I got to pick raspberries with little sister for $3/hour and we ate berries and pretty much played the whole time (hence the lousy pay. :) Or maybe it's because I like to make pie, and berry pies are where it's at! Or maybe it goes back even further, because I can't pick berries without thinking of my all-time favorite childhood book, "Blueberries For Sal."
(I absolutely love the sketches and characterful faces. I always thought the mother in the story was my Grandma Alma because she looked a lot like a sketch I had seen of her.)
Sorry... I got side tracked. :)
Anyway, as you might imagine, we jumped at the chance when Grandpa Scott claimed he "found the mother-load." And so he did. There were lots of little berries, and although we didn't run into bears like little Sal, we did see some gorgeous scenery!
Pictures just can capture the magnitude and the beauty. It was so theraputic just listening to the wind blow through the trees. This was one of my favorite parts of the trip.
Grandma Helen fed us SO WELL! She packed a yummy picnic for us. Is there anything better than a yummy turkey sandwich in the forest with the people you love. It was heavenly! My kind of day!
To the 'Burg...
Taking road trips with a car full of little kids isn't an easy task, but allow me to celebrate an all day drive cut in half! YAY! It was so much more doable!
I headed home for a quick trip to take a math class I needed for teacher re-certification. (Big thank you to all my sweet baby-sitters who made it possible!) It was all-day, all-week, so I was pretty busy; however, we managed to squeeze in a few memories and fun along the way. Here's the scoop.
We found a good pit stop to stretch our legs after two bouts of "car-sickness". Then we pressed on...
...And it was worth it. We are always so warmly greeted with open arms. How lucky are we?!
Of course, we had to take a moment to relax.
And then play.
And we said hello to the horses. (What will we ever do if Pepsi and Choice aren't there to eat our sour apples and carrot stems?! I think it would break Seth's heart. He really loves those horse.)
The picture isn't great, but the company and conversation were. We were out shelling peas as fast as the girls could pick them. They were quite tasty. Brig just ate the whole thing. :)
While we were busy shelling peas, we wondered where the boys were. This is were I found those couch potatoes, doing some male bonding. :)
The kids did the "double-dunk". This has become a "tradition" with Grandpa, although he might reconsider after how quickly they polished off the package this last time. :)
